Specialized Unveils Crux DSW: Lightest Alloy Gravel Frame Ever

New Hydroformed Aluminium Frame Weighs Just 1399 Grams

What Makes the Crux DSW a Lightweight Marvel?

Specialized has introduced the Crux DSW, an aluminium gravel bike they claim is the lightest in its class. Weighing just 1399 grams for a 56cm frame, this bike aims to combine durability with impressive performance. The complete bike weighs 9.37kg, setting a new standard for lightweight gravel bikes.

How Does D'Aluisio Smartweld Technology Enhance the Frame?

The Crux DSW owes its lightweight and strength to Specialized’s D'Aluisio Smartweld (DSW) technology. This method, also used in the Allez Sprint, involves hydroforming, which uses high-pressure fluid to shape the aluminium. This precise technique ensures stronger and lighter joints, as the tubes meet exactly as the engineers intend without the need for additional shaping or "mitring."

The frame's construction includes a single-piece downtube and bottom bracket, which forms the core structure. The remaining tubes are then welded to this section, allowing for added material in high-stress areas. This results in a durable frame without the extra weight typical of older welding methods.

Key Features of the Crux DSW

Smartweld Technology: The DSW process, also used in the Allez Sprint, enhances the frame's strength and durability by adding material at the ends of the tubes where they are welded.
Frame Construction: A single-piece downtube and threaded bottom bracket form the core of the Crux DSW, with the other tubes welded to this section. This design places extra material in high-stress areas, optimizing ride performance without overbuilding the frame.
Geometry and Fit: The Crux DSW retains the performance-oriented geometry of the carbon Crux, offering an extended reach and low stack for a balanced ride. The 72mm bottom bracket drop provides stability and nimbleness, crucial for gravel riding.
Fork and Tyre Clearance: Paired with a Fact 12r carbon fork, the Crux DSW offers tyre clearance up to 47mm, or 2.1 inches with a 650B wheel, making it versatile for various terrains.
